Shamsa in Arabic means sun. it is also the name of a neck collar which was common in northern Yemen. The collar was made of sun-shaped motif, giving it its name. the graphic element in the center of this piece is in fact a simplification of a sun; an often-repeating motif in Yemenite jewelry. In past times, the sun was attributed with great power in attracting the divine bounty represented by the celestial bodies.
